INTRODUCTION


The Nigerian Army Welfare Insurance Scheme (NAWIS) is one of the schemes established to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the Nigerian Army (NA) personnel. The scheme commenced operation in January 1988. It was established to complement the existing Benevolent Fund Scheme (Benfund) which was instituted earlier in 1983 to ... provide immediate succour to all NA personnel and their families in the event of death, retirement or discharge from active service. Due to the complementary nature of the two Schemes the Management of Benfund was taken over by NAWIS in September 2000. Furthermore, the NA established Army welfare holdings limited (AWHL) which later in 2008 metamorphosed to Nigerian Army Welfare Limited/Guarantee (NAWL/G). NAWIS was then positioned under NAWL/G. Subsequently, in 2021, NAWIS was then restructured and put under a new company called the Nigerian Army Finance Cooperation (NAFIC). The current Executive Finance Director for NAFIC is Major General SS Jiya while the Managing Director for NAWIS is Brigadier General MS Adamu.

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT


The establishment of NAWIS became necessary due to the refusal of conventional insurance companies to underwrite risks associated with soldiering, particularly war fighting. The company was therefore established by the NA as a Private Limited Liability Company with its shares limited by guarantee under the Company and Allied Matters Decree ...1990. This Decree has been re-designated as the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) Cap C20 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. Like other companies, NAWIS has a Memorandum of Association, which states clearly its objectives and the Articles of Association which states how the company should be administered.
